He had eleven siblings and he was the tenth of all twelve kids. When he was five years old his dad took up a job in Mississippi and they all moved there. His father passed away a year later because of heart stroke and two days after his father’s death his younger sister also passed away.
During World War 2 he served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1945. He went to the University of South Carolina in Columbia.
