On March 22, 1967, after his match as the defending champion against Zora Folley, he was stripped off his title as he refused to join the Army Services. His boxing license was suspended and he was sentenced to 5 years in prison alongside a fine of 10,000 Dollars. He paid the fine and the bond and remained free but couldn’t resume boxing because of a revoked license.
